Music at the bedside: Finding comfort and connection in healthcare

When a patient shares that music has always held significance in their life, I seize the opportunity to connect through music, extending the invitation to both the patient and their loved ones. In my role caring for individuals facing significant health challenges, I recognize the ripple effect of illness on the entire support network. Thus, I often find myself singing at the bedside.

In these moments, some patients and their loved ones join in song, while others simply listen, finding solace in the melodies. I've observed how this musical interaction fosters communication, serving as a conduit to affirm each individual's humanity, especially poignant with my patients grappling with dementia. Through music, I've rediscovered a profound sense of fulfillment in my profession, rekindling joy amidst the challenges of caregiving.
