Less than 1 in 5 people with moderate or severe opioid use disorder is offered any of the three FDA-approved medications for treating opioid use disorder, and these medications are very effective. Alarmingly, not enough people are aware that the entire illicit drug supply is contaminated with fentanyl from Mexico. Many overdose deaths involve people who did not intend to use opioids; they thought they were taking something else, had no tolerance, and ended up dying quickly as a result. Raising awareness is crucial: people should be carrying the overdose reversal drug naloxone, especially now that higher-dose forms are available to more effectively reverse a fentanyl overdose.
