Primary care's role in holistic mental health care

I often engage in extensive in-office counseling sessions that involve hands-on, emotionally-focused talk therapy, in addition to prescribing medications. Furthermore, many of my patients face intricate challenges due to their unique circumstances. For instance, a significant number of individuals who have successfully overcome previous addictions now find themselves in the process of rebuilding their lives. Some of these individuals have a well-documented history of needing stimulant medications to manage conditions like attention deficit disorder.

The complexity of their situations becomes evident when we consider the interplay of various factors, such as the use of past pain medications, ongoing antidepressant therapy, and the potential addition of stimulant medication. This decision can be pivotal in their ability to maintain or secure employment. While it may not be the ideal setting, the primary care internal medicine office is where I find myself addressing these multifaceted medical treatments.
