Beyond the stereotypes: the truth about occupational therapy #shorts

As an occupational therapist, I often hear people assuming that our field is only about helping people with their jobs or assisting children with their handwriting. But the truth is, occupational therapy is so much more than that!

We are trained to work with individuals across their lifespan and help them to be successful and independent in their daily activities. That means anything from being able to shower independently to commuting to work to participating in leisure activities. Our focus is on using everyday occupations to improve cognitive and physical skills, making life easier and more fulfilling for our clients.

Don't be fooled by the narrow-minded view of occupational therapy. We are a diverse and dynamic field, making a real difference in the lives of those we serve.

Taylor Gurley is a professor of occupational therapy.
